SmugMug > keywords > night > 14.12.09 - Shop 'til You Drop Christmas shopping goes on whatever the weather! I had a strange case of deja vu when I was taking this. I'd just walked out of the bank, the building on the right, and noticed how the lights were reflecting off the pavement. It was raining hard so this was a snatched shot one handed, with the other hand trying to shelter the lens, not bad at 1/8th! As I was taking it I heard someone say "why is he taking a photo in the rain?", as if they couldn't see why! Just like the people bemoaning the fog last Friday up by the Cathedral. I sometimes wonder if most people see the world the same way as me, but I reckon it's their loss :)
SmugMug > keywords > night > Time Passes As a photographer I'm inspired by beautiful landscapes, striking images, magical light, all the usual stuff. But there are other less tangible things such as history and the threads that connect places through time. I'm lucky to live in a beautiful old City that breathes history on every corner, and has more photo opps than you can shake a stick at. There had been people living in and around Lincoln for millennia before the Romans arrived, and this narrow street has witnessed so many things in it's time. The Romans marched through here two thousand years ago, on their way to the fort on top of the hill, a thousand years before the Cathedral was built. I find it impossible to look at a scene like this without thinking of all those people, what they were doing, where they were going, and what they were thinking? Now shoppers and tourists, and photographers on their way back to their car on a cold wet December evening, pass this way. I've taken this shot, or one very like it, many times before, but there is always something different so I never tire of it.
SmugMug > keywords > night > The Beaver House at Night; Grand Marais, Minnesota The Beaver House in Grand Marais is the funkiest bait and tackle shop I've ever been in. Handmade lures, tanks of minnows, and blue glass are only a few of the things found inside. Outside has a back-lot full of ice machines. I have no idea if they work. At five above zero Fahrenheit, it doesn't really matter.
